As I was going through some old pictures, I came across this one of my dad. I believe it was around 1972-73. But check out the car! It was a 1967 SS/RS Camaro. The first one in Longview and was housed in the Contessa Inn's lobby. My dad's brother, Joe, bought it when my dad was serving in the Army. When my dad came home, he bought it. I LOVED this car! I wanted it to be my first set of wheels and even saved a little bit of money to repair it. I remember me and my dad driving home one day and he was so sick, he had to keep pulling over. I asked him if he wanted me to drive! As if I could drive a four speed when I could barely see over the dash. I remember him telling me "I got it" and we did make it home!
I also remember the "hide-a-way" headlights. Shutters would close over the headlights when the lights were off and slide to the sides and "hide" when the healights were on. There were many times when they needed help going into position. The gas cap always needed help too. People would honk and flag us down to tell us we were about to lose our gas cap. My mom used to get so aggravated with that! It had "SS" on it and was below the trunk lid. The car also had the black striped "nose" around the hood. The interior was black with small white piping. This car was unique in that it was an "SS" and "RS" - SS for Super Sport and RS for Rally Sport.
We sold it when I was around 19 and I cried when the new owner picked it up. Wish I had it now - it would be worth a pretty penny!
I have a lot of stories and pics I want to share, but they're all over the place! I hope you'll enjoy our "oldies but goodies!"
